Mr. Shields founded Griffin Capital in 1995, serves as the Company’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, and is based in the firm’s headquarters in El Segundo, CA. Griffin Capital is the sponsor or co-sponsor of two ‘40 Act Interval Funds, several public, non-listed real estate investment trusts and private offerings. Mr. Shields is the President and a Trustee of Griffin Institutional Access®Credit Fund and Griffin Institutional Access®Real Estate Fund, and Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Griffin Capital Essential Asset REIT (GCEAR). Mr. Shields is also Chairman of Griffin Capital Securities, LLC, member FINRA/SIPC, the dealer manager, exclusive wholesale marketing agent and/or master placement agent for Griffin Capital Company sponsored and co-sponsored investment solutions. Mr. Shields also serves as Chief Executive Officer of Griffin Capital Advisor, LLC and Griffin Capital Credit Advisor, LLC, two SEC-registered investment advisors which are advisors to Griffin Institutional Access Real Estate Fund and Griffin Institutional Access Credit Fund, respectively.

Before founding Griffin, Mr. Shields was a Senior Vice President and head of the Structured Real Estate Finance Group at Jefferies &Company, Inc. in Los Angeles and a Vice President in the Real Estate Finance Department of Salomon Brothers Inc. in both New York and Los Angeles. With over 30 years of experience in real estate and investment banking, Mr. Shields has structured and closed over 200 transactions totaling in excess of $8 billion of real estate acquisitions, financings and dispositions.

Mr. Shields holds a Juris Doctorate from Boalt Hall School of Law and an MBA from Haas Graduate School of Business, University of California at Berkeley. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Beta Gamma Sigma distinction. Mr. Shields holds a BS, Haas Undergraduate School of Business, University of California and graduated with a Phi Beta Kappa distinction.
